Airport’s best ever month

Andrew Board

Nelson Airport has recorded its busiest month ever, with a whopping 22 per cent increase on passenger numbers from the same time last year. That saw 78,509 people either fly in or out of the airport during January and follows on from a record December the month before. But it wasn’t the only good news the airport announced this week, 2015 was also a record year, with 778,384 passengers passing through the airport. It beat 2014 by more than 10,000 passengers. Three new airlines to the region is the major reason for the huge jump in passenger numbers, but it is putting pressure on the airport’s infrastructure. Plans for a new airport ter-

minal are progressing well for a 2018 opening, but Nelson Airport manager Rob Evans says they couldn’t wait that long for a car park upgrade due to the terminal’s heavy use. “The front of the terminal is really quite dangerous at the moment. There’s a lot of mixed traffic going on, with people trying to jostle around. There’s a high volume of people trying to cross the crossing to the short term car parking and it’s actually becoming a real health and safety issue.” So the current short term parking will become more space for rental cars, where demand has dramatically jumped. The short term parking will move to a section of the current long term parking section.

Not too many teenage girls celebrate the same birthday on the same day as their grandmother but that’s exactly what happened when Stoke’s Holly Young and her nana Jean Young blew out the candles on their 18th birthday cake on Sunday. That may sounds a bit like a game show riddle but there’s actually a perfectly good explanation with Jean being born on a leap day back in 1944. Although the East Taieri grandmother is actually turning 72, she will officially be celebrating her 18th birthday alongside Holly who turns a slightly younger version of 18 on February 22. “We’ll both be 18 so we’ll be old enough to go have a drink in the pub to celebrate,” Jean joked. “The girls all think it’s a great laugh.” Holly says “it’s awesome” that she is sharing her 18th birthday with her grandmother and admits she has had a few strange looks

“I’ve seen them in Buxton Square and they seem fine to me, but I wouldn’t like it if they were trashing the environment.”

“Personally, I don’t mind them. I used to clean the Buxton Square toilets and found it was the locals trashing them - not the freedom campers.”

A dedicated zone for public drop offs – separate to where taxis and shuttles pick up – will be created. Rob says the other major factor for the change was the “outdated” ticket system. “It’s constantly breaking down and it’s become untenable for us. It already well past its useful life, it’s a constant source of frustration and complaints by customers.” He says the new ticketing system is “top of the range” and will be recycled when the new terminal is built. The new terminal will be a complete rebuild and see the car parks jump from the current 650 to 1200. Rob says the huge increase in passengers this summer highlights the need for a new terminal. “Even before this summer, the new terminal was certainly on the radar and it is a project that certainly needs to be done. The growth we’ve had this summer has accentuated that need.”

Grandma and her granddaughter turn 18 FROM PAGE 1 when she tells her friends about it. “They look at me like I’m joking but then they usually work it out,” Holly says. It was the second time Jean has shared a birthday celebration with one of her granddaughters. Four years ago Jean turned 17 in the same year as Holly’s older sister Jess. Jean, who has six grandchildren including five granddaughters, says she gave Holly a silver locket for her birthday. “I’ve always given them some money for their birthdays up until they turn 18 and then I get them a silver locket,” Jean says. “But after that, they are on their own - they are old enough to look after themselves.” Although Jean is turning 72, Holly’s mum Rebecca says her mother-in-law could easily pass for an 18-year-old.

Leap Year facts * Every four years, an additional day is added to calendars to make up for the fact that a year is actually 365.242 days long, rather than a precise 365 days. * The extra fraction, .242, multiplied by four does not equal one so it is balanced by skipping the extra day every three out four century years. 2000 will be a leap year but 2100, 2200 and 2300 will not. * The Egyptians are credited with inventing the leap year. * The law of averages means your chance of being born on February 29 are one out of 1461. “She’s a real laugh and has so much energy she’s just like an 18-year-old. A slip triggered by heavy rain in Nelson last week has caused significant damage to the Brook Sanctuary’s pest proof fence. A significant 65 metres of the fence line, which was only completed six months ago, will need to be repaired, after a slip came down Fringed Hill above the pest proof fence track and the Dun Mountain Trail. Brook Waimarama Sanctuary general manager Hudson Dodd says the entire perimeter of the fence was checked on Friday and they are now having the damage and repairs to the fence assessed. “Once this process has been completed we will know what the programme of remedial works will look like,” he says. “Of course, we want the repairs to be done as soon as possible, but we won’t have a timeframe for this until the assessment is finished, which may take some time due to the complexity of the situation.” Well-known Nelson mountainbiking advocate Bryce Buckland says it’s “not surprising” that the fence has been

He has been against the building of the pest proof fence right from the start, and voiced his concerns after a 22 metre section of the Dun Mountain Trail slipped onto the fence line cut following heavy rain last March. “Why they put the fence in before clearing the remainder of the slip above it that was triggered by their fence cut is beyond me,” says Bryce. “Now they are probably going to have to cut into the hillside again to fix the fence which will trigger another slip. “When we get a significant rain and wind storm event, then we will see real carnage up there.

They are fiddling with nature and they, and ratepayers, will pay the penalty.” But Hudson says both the Trust and Nelson City Council were aware of the risk of slips on Fringed Hill. “All prudent steps have been taken to minimise and mitigate that risk,” he says. “The great community benefits of the project outweigh the risk of slips to the pest proof fence. While it’s disappointing to see it damaged, contractors are working on an assessment for repairs.” Nelson City Council’s communication manager Paul Shattock says that engineers will be completing a more detailed investigation this week.

A rise in the number of freedom campers is turning the city’s car parks in a “free motor camp in the Marie Place middle of town”. every door and spoke very loudly but that’s the game, we don’t have to pay for this campsite and not everyone likes that.” Uniquely Nelson manager Simon Duffy says that Nelson’s freedom camping is great for tourism, but does have knock-on effects. “I’m sitting on the fence, they save money on accommodation and in turn spend money within the industry on activities, but I do know the retailers don’t like it, their thoughts are it just doesn’t look good for Nelson. “I walked through the Buxton carpark the other day and there must have been 21 vans or cars there, basically it’s a free motor camp in the middle of town.” Bar owner Debbie Graham, from 623 in the City, says she’s definitely not a fan of freedom campers. “It’s really frustrating having them out there, my biggest gripe is that it doesn’t create a very nice atmosphere for my customers out in the courtyard, and they often leave a mess. “It’s especially annoying on Saturday mornings, they’ll still be parked there, and in the meantime there are all these people who want to come in and spend money who are trying to find parks.”

They came, they saw, they thrilled. The New Zealand Warriors – lead for the final time by their home-town skipper Simon Mannering – delighted a stellar 9200 crowd at Trafalgar Park on Saturday, despite the hosts suffering a decisive 46-10 loss against Sydney’s St George Illawarra Dragons. But it wasn’t about the score; the event itself was a huge success. The Dragons arrived in Nelson on Monday for the NRL pre-season game and spent the week interacting with local schools, charities and sports teams. The Warriors also spent time meeting locals, with visits to Richmond Mall, schools and a charity dinner at McCashin’s on Thursday night. The match was organised by the fledging Trafalgar Events, owned by Aldo Miccio

Nelson’s Simon Mannering leads the Warriors out for the final time as captain, at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. and Barry Galbraith. Both men gave the event an emphatic thumbs up. “It was an amazing day. The crowd loved it, the teams loved it. It was fantastic,” said Aldo after the match. In the crowd, people came from far and wide: Greymouth, Wellington, Blenheim, Christchurch. “It’s the greatest thing ever, I used to live in Auckland so we used to go to all the

games,” says Greg Williams of Nelson. Blenheim’s Tez Hardwick was enjoying the day. “We’re all Warriors fans, we’re not enjoying the score but we’re definitely enjoying the occasion.” Aldo says they are hoping to bring the Warriors back to Nelson, if not next year then the year after. “Now we need to sit down with both teams. But the players and management loved it and want to come back, but it’s just a matter of schedules.” Both he and Barry say watching the Mad Butcher, Sir Peter Leitch, land on the ground in a helicopter before kickoff was a highlight, as they surprised him by flying his grandson down from Auckland for the game. The other highlight, they say, was watching Simon Mannering lead the team onto Trafalgar Park. “There were so many highlights,” says Aldo. “But those were special.”

Here are some stories from www. Family rescued from flooded river: A couple and their nine-month-old baby were rescued from their stranded vehicle after it was trapped in the flooded Waimea River late Wednesday evening. Nelson Surf Lifesavers Aaron Lyttle and Marcus Gardner responded, pulling the family out of their 4WD and returning them to safety at about 10.30pm. “It was all on, they got caught in a flash flood and got stuck on an island between the stock bank and the river, so we went and got them out,” says Aaron. “We launched the IRB (inflatable rescue boat) off the Lower Queen St stock bank and went up the overflow in the dark. We had to cut a couple of fences to get through but we got them into the IRB, strapped lifejackets on them and wrapped them up in blankets.” “They were still a bit shaken up and nervous, especially with the young one, but we got them back and into the ambulance. “They certainly made the right decision to call for help, it would have been extremely risky in the dark and with a young baby, it could have gone pearshaped quickly.”

Huge crowd for Brightwater wine and food festival Wine and music were flowing as over 4000 locals filed into Sunday’s Brightwater Wine & Food Festival, armed with umbrellas, picnic blankets and an endless sea of sunscreen. Middle Earth Vineyard played host to the annual festival once more and was joined by the Mussel Inn, Waimea Estate, Millcrest Wines, Dale’s Brewing and other local vineyards, breweries and food stalls. Brightwater's Marian Goodman lives only a stone’s throw from the event. “This is our fourth year coming, it’s such a cool community event and I only have to walk across the road.” Organiser Kevin Gear says Sunday’s festival was a dream. “It was a great day with no trouble, the weather was fantastic, the venue looked superb and everyone was just enjoying the music, food, wine and beer.” Kevin says the big winner was the camper vans, “We had around 50 turn up from all around New Zealand and they had a great time.” For the first time, the festival opened its gates to motorhomes, offering a free stay amongst the vineyards. Noel and Barb Bain, who travelled up from Oamaru with Raewyn and Terry Thorpe, made the most of the festival’s new addition. “It was a good stay last night, everyone had a good time and it was very sociable,” says Terry. The group had never been to the festival before but said they were having a great time and recommended the Middle Earth wines.

As we age loss of volume is one of largest contributing factors to facial lines, wrinkles and crow’s feet. As the years pass, the bones of the face shrink, as well as fat and soft tissue being lost from under the skin. This leaves hollows under the eyes, at the temples and at the corners of the mouth, pleating across the cheeks, and grooves running from the nose to the mouth. The ‘apple’ of the cheek may also sink.

At enhanceskin we can help you address these aging issues. Dermal fillers give your face youthful volume with instant (yes, we mean instant!) and long-lasting results.

Dermal fillers hydrate your skin. They draw in water molecules to plump up and hydrate your skin, and can be thought of as internal moisturisers. Dermal fillers can also effectively hydrate your décolletage area and the backs of your hands, two other areas that often show visible signs of aging.

Used alongside other treatments dermal fillers have the potential to reduce acne pitting and scarring.

Dermal fillers are reversible. Dermal fillers can be reversed using a reversing agent called hyaluronidase, this breaks up the hyaluronic acid present in dermal fillers. This is unlikely to be necessary, because following your cosmedical consult with Dr David Orsbourn or Registered Nurse, Lacey Boyd, we will know exactly what you’re trying to achieve and will make sure the results look natural and effortless, your secret will be safe with us!

On March 1st 1986, hundreds of Nelsonians waited outside the big red apple on Atawhai Drive to celebrate the official opening of Founders Heritage Park. Three decades on, and it is still one of the region’s bestloved family attractions. The park is celebrating its 30th birthday this Sunday with a garden party, which Facility Manager Maria Anderson says will be “a nod to the opening day” with ‘jazz, cheese and beer.’ The family-friendly event will also feature lawn games, a story time tent, free birthday cake, and people can bring their own picnic. Founders Park was first mooted back in the 1970s when the Newman family, founders of the Newman Brothers coaching firm, generously donated $50,000 for the development of a regional transport museum. During the early years of development, historic buildings were relocated to the park and others were replicated, with over 20,000 items being donated by the Nelson community. The 1986 opening celebrated ‘stage one’ of the development - this was before the railway line, windmill or energy centre were there, but they were built shortly after-

wards. Stages two and three of the park were staggered over the following years. Maria, who has been there for eight years, says the popularity of the park continues to grow, with a regular schedule of well-known events including the Founders Book Fair, MarchFest, Evolve Festival and many others. “For the next two months The Granary is fully booked to host weddings, and we also now have 24 tenants here which gives us a living, breathing park,” she says. “Some tenants have brought

their history with them, such as the Duncan family and their six generations of brewing, which fits incredibly well into the whole experience.” Maria says they still aim to follow the founding “key” philosophies, which include being a family-focused attraction and a versatile and multi-use place. She also says she has put a lot of time into developing displays, which have lifted the look and feel of the park. Organisers will also be commemorating the park’s place in the community over the last thirty years by asking people to share their memories of the park. During March, Founders will be collecting these memories and encourage people to bring photos into the windmill, post them on the Founders Facebook page, or bring them to the birthday bash. Founders Heritage Park 30th Birthday Garden Party, Sunday 28 February, 12-4pm. Entry $2, children under 16 free. If the weather is wet, the event will move into the Energy Centre.

“The solution is a community one,” he says. “We need to find ways to distribute the bait as cheaply and strategically as possible around the infested areas.” They are hoping to organise an ‘ant month’ in the springtime when they will hold ‘mixing parties’ to get whole streets on board and encourage the community

to put bait jars down simultaneously. “It only takes one or two households to resist and you don’t get rid of the infestation, it just stays there and will spread out again. The ants can advance 160 metres a year.” Andrew says they are currently trialling versions of the bait locally, and they hope to hold a meeting in Tahunanui soon to see if there is support for a strategy to tackle the problem in a new and more effective way. “You have to think of it as a war, not a battle,” says Andrew. “The ants only landed here in 2001 and have been on the march since, but we have the opportunity to try to knock them back. In 10 years time we won’t have the opportunity to do anything - now we still have hope.” If you are interested in finding out more, please contact Judy at Tahunanui Community Centre on (03) 548 6036 or look out for the Centre’s updates on Facebook and Neighbourly.

Two Nelson residents believe they may have come up with a cost-effective and long-term solution for controlling Argentine ants in the region, using bait made from just sugar, water and borax. But, they say it will only work if the whole community gets behind their idea. Dr Kay Sneddon and Andrew Goldsworthy have teamed up to develop the bait, which is based on a similar project carried out in California where Argentine ants are regarded as the number one pest. They say the key to the bait’s effectiveness is using a low concentration of borax, a household product, which is a natural salt and has a low level of toxicity. It is not poisonous to animals or humans in low concentrations as long as precautions are taken. “Borax has been used to combat ants for ages - it’s not new, but what is new is the concentration,” says Kay. “People used to use it in very high

concentrations, but it would kill the working ants straight away so wouldn’t have a chance to bring the bait back to kill the queens, which is what we need to do. But this low dose bait will allow the worker ants to return to the nest with the bait and get it into the colonies.” Andrew says the reason Argentine ants have established themselves so strongly in Nelson is because they have multiple queens and form ‘supercolonies.’ And it’s a problem which Nelsonians risk “turning a blind eye to.” They both say the ants are very concentrated in parts of Nelson, especially The Wood and Panorama Drive, but are widely found in the region and can be spread in potting mix. Some believe that they could even get into the beech forests, where they could potentially cause an even greater risk. “I think we’ve only just woken up to the fact that they’ve landed,” he says. “As the Council's handout warns us, they have the potential to

Golden Downs’ history unveiled Jessie Johnston

Golden Downs’ place in the region’s forestry industry is as big as the 33,000 hectares it covers, and now a group of former forestry workers want to make sure that history is accessible to more people. In 1927, a large exotic forest planting programme was put in place at Golden Downs Forest. Two decades later, in 1946, construction of a new village began at Valley Road and in 1951 the woodsman training school opened its doors. The group of ex forestry workers say the history of the past community will be on display for anyone to read about, complemented by a number of historical photographs. “The village is part of Nelson's forestry history and we want people to go there and understand that there was a viable community there,” says John Ward. The village incorporated around 27 houses and was home to the administration staff that oversaw the whole forestry operation. The village even included a hall, a post office, rugby ground, shop, a large mechanical workshop, medical clinic and a population of around 270. Meanwhile, the woodsmen were accommodated in two large hostels and, in the 30 years it operated, 1050 passed through as junior woodsman,

half of those graduating. When John and fellow forest ranger Don Cooper retired in the early 1990s, they both decided to write a history of the forest, published in 1997, and then around five years ago the suggestion was made to John to create an information board on the original village site. “The reason we didn't proceed with it was we were worried about vandalism, so we shelved it. However, Reid Mallinson, an ex-woodsman from Murchison, was very keen to get things going so he got us focused and we decided to go ahead and do it,” says John. Along with Doug Ashford and Denis Wastney, the group has organised for two information panels to be created with an informal unveiling to take place on the weekend of March 19

and 20. The weekend will also include a reunion of ex forestry workers, including a trip to Higgins Heritage Park where a display of the old woodsman school and village memorabilia will be on show, including photos dating back to 1954. After the unveiling on Saturday, March 19, both two metre by 800mm information panels will be available for everyone to view, visible from the WaiIti/St Arnaud Rd. The group wishes to thank Signs and Graphics for the work they've done putting the panels together and the Cameron family on whose land the panels will be erected, along with Willie Cameron for his help and expertise. Anyone wishing to attend the informal unveiling can contact Denis Wastney on 545 7299.

navy ship opens for the nelsonians HMNZS Otago was swamped by the public on Saturday, as wave after wave stepped aboard to explore the Navy ship during its open day. This is the first time Otago has come to Nelson, the port visit being part of Operation Neptune, the navy’s 75th anniversary. The open day gave members of the public a chance to get up close and personal with the ship and the crew, and learn about the role of the navy, which included a weapons display and the chance to walk through areas such as the bridge and the galley. The 87 metre ship has a core crew of 37, with an 80 person capacity, and is mainly involved in fisheries and customs patrols. Nelson’s Fletcher Slierendrecht is an Ensign aboard the ship, joining the navy as an officer in 2014. “I’ve seen some pretty cool stuff and done some pretty awesome stuff in ports,

Drones giving new perspective on our city Camera drones have given photographers access to shots usually only attainable by those with enough money to hire a helicopter – and the results are spectacular. There are several commercial operators in Nelson, but one local man who has been taking some spectacular shots of our region says, for him, it started as a hobby. “In my work, Toby I operate Harvey. underwater vehicles by remote control, basically submarines under the sea,” says Toby Harvey. “So when I first heard of drones I thought I’d already have a head start.” Toby works at sea for long periods, but it also means he is home in Nelson for long periods. He says his first drone took a few hits but he now has the latest in 4k drone technology and is using it for good. He’s already captured a

Anthea Goodman I attended the Jesus Heals meetings at Aspire church in Nelson on thurs, fri, and sat night last weekend. On the second night, they were praying for people with problems related to the organs of the five senses, I went up for prayer for my nose that was broken when I was 14 years old playing volleyball at high school, I have always found it difficult to breath out of my nose with my mouth shut, as the prayer was spoken I noticed an ease with my breathing and now have no problem breathing through my nose with my mouth shut. Also I said to one of my children that God was going to heal my knees I couldn’t kneel down comfortable as there

was pain behind my right knee, also I had damaged the ligaments just above my knees doing heavy lifting work building a mud brick house, this caused inflamation and the doctor said you couldn’t do anything about it, the result of this is that any walking downhill is painfull, well as this lady was finishing her prayer for my breathing, my knees dipped twice and I thought I wonder if my knees have been healed, when I went back to my seat I knelt down and there was no pain behind my right knee, the next day I went for a steep walk up the Richmond hills and when I came down I didn’t notice any pain. Thank Jesus you are our healer and our saviour.

Today I had a chance to test out the healing I received at the Healing Meeting. I wheelbarrowed concrete for several hours this afternoon. I even ran back pushing the barrow to the truck each time it needed to be replenished. I experienced NO PAIN! All glory to Jesus! “ they will lay hands on the sick and they shall recover”!

Pat Campbell I have a history of heart attacks and cardiac arrests. The Lord has shepherded me through them all and I have enjoyed a very good recovery. However in cold conditions and during exertion I usually got some chest pain through angina. This limited my walks on cold days to less than a kilometre if a slope was involved. I had prayer

for a heart condition on Thursday night and on Friday morning I walked about three times my usual distance in frosty conditions and up steep hills. I got puffed but had no chest pain. I repeated the exercise on Saturday and Sunday without problems. Praise the Lord! Murray Clarkson (77)

My girl (10yrs) because of the genetic condition she has, had been suffering excruciating pain in her knees. Doctors said she would need at least 3 surgeries on her knees between now and 15yrs old. Every night she would wake at least 3 times screaming in pain. Well last night she never woke once! I asked her this morning “are your knees mamae(sore) and she says “nope”. Our God is so awesome! Our saviour,

our provider, our healer! Ah needless to say, because we all had a great nights sleep none of us woke up until 8.20am oops! Bit late to school. UPDATE!! Another night of unbroken sleep and my girl has been jumping and running all yesterday and today! She has been full-on running on the side lines at rugby and jumping on the trampoline today for over an hour! My God My God My God your love for us never ceases!

Shelley Doherty On Friday at work I had one of the worse Asthma attacks I have had as an adult. Last night when I walked into the Jesus Heals meeting I still couldn’t breathe properly, could barely talk, and was wheezing. One thing you can’t do in that state is sing - except God. During worship my symptoms started to leave

and I was praying God give me new lungs - restore me, please don’t just fix me up, heal me. After Elder Netsy prayed for me every symptom left. I walked out healed. Better yet my unsaved husband couldn’t believe what had happened - I walked out a mess and came home new!

Ellena Feasey Healing testimony: For the past 5 and a half months I’ve suffered from Endometriosis. This is a chronic disease which caused great discomfort in my stomach as well as shooting pain in my legs, back and consistent cramps. I had to sleep with a wheat bag (or three) to ease the pain, Codeine, Panadol and Naproxen were my best friends. Well not any more! I went to the Thursday night meeting and in the 2nd worship song all the pain in my legs left me. Then Lorraine talked about visualising the healn take place. So I saw this mantle of liquid gold being

poured out all of my body. I saw it enter my mouth and when it reached the stomach, I saw the Endo literally dissolve! Went up for prayer afterwards too. After the meeting I tested the healing; any amount of sugar would flare up my stomach and cause severe pain, so I went to Maccas to grab a thickshake which was something I couldn’t drink beforehand. Not only could i drink the whole thing but there was NO PAIN! When I got home the Lord ministered to my back and woke up the next morning PAIN FREE! I haven’t taken a pill since! Praise God

IN 2016 support of some strong senior members, NBF are proud to offer players the chance to compete at this level. The Tasman United women’s football team was also granted entry into the Mainland Women’s Premier League late last year, a league of eight that features the top club teams from Christchurch. This is the first time ever the region has had a team competing at this level, offering the best female players in Nelson and Marlborough the opportunity to play in winter at the highest level. In December, Ryan Stewart was selected as coach and he quickly began the process of picking a squad of 20, with 11 games set Club FC Nelson Juniors FC Nelson Seniors Garin College Golden Bay AFC Mapua FC Motueka FC – Juniors Motueka FC – Seniors Nayland College Nelson College Nelson College for Girls Nelson Suburbs FC Rangers Moutere FC Richmond Athletic FC Tahunanui Senior FC Waimea College Waimea Plains AFC Wakefield FC

So you’ve now completed the pathway as far as you can go and given those young players the chance to go right down this route in football and they don’t have to leave their region to do it.”

Football is the biggest participation sport in the region, with thousands of players from the age of four to a select few still playing in their 60s, enjoying the game from April through to the end of the season in September. Locally, football starts at the age of four with the First Kicks programme, followed by Fun Football for ages 7-8, then it moves in to junior and youth leagues. At senior level there is a women’s second division played on Sundays, accommodating multi-sport players, a women’s first division that plays on Saturdays and four men’s divisions which also take place on Saturdays. Local clubs playing include FC Nelson, Nelson Suburbs, Richmond Athletic, Tahunanui FC, Wakefield, Waimea Plains, Mapua, Upper Moutere, Motueka and Golden Bay, as well as Nelson College, Nelson College for Girls, Waimea College, Garin College and Nayland College. Nelson Bays Football have just one more key message they’d like to get across before the start of the season, join in and enjoy the fantastic game of football.

Nelson rowers brought home a swag of gold from the national rowing championship at Lake Karapiro over the weekend. Olly Stephens was a big winner, taking home two gold medals, a silver and a national trial on the back of his performance. Olly won the under 20 mens single race, teamed up with Wade Puklowski to win silver in the senior double and was a part of the Nelson/Marlborough mens 8 that won gold. Nelson Rowing Club coach Tim Babbage says Olly’s performance wasn’t a surprise to him but it may have been to others. “He was the only guy who medalled in that race who wasn’t in a high performance centre team.” The mens 8 team also featured Wade, Ryan Flintoff and Jack Castle from Nelson and four Marlborough rowers. The Nelson club’s third gold came from the women’s under 19 four, featuring HOCKEY: The 2016 National Masters hockey tournament will be held in Nelson from Sunday February 28 until Saturday, March 5. A thousand players from 69 teams will take part in the week long tournament Nelson will field 8 teams in the tournament with women’s teams competing in the 35, 40, 45 and 50 grades, whilst the Men will have 35, 45, 55 and 60s men. The games will run from 8am - 8pm

Triathletes conquer gruelling ironman Nelson triathletes had a big day out at Challenge Wanaka on Saturday, battling big distances and a relentless north-wester in one of the most testing editions of the popular long-distance triathlon. It was already going to be a tough day completing either the 112.9km half or 225.8km full iron-distance race in and around Lake Wanaka, but the wind ramped up the suffering for many of the 1640 athletes. Big waves rolled through the swim course while the wind made the cycle section an exercise in survival – the only relief was on the run when athletes managed to get some shelter on the walking track on the banks of the Clutha River. But Nelson athletes rose to the challenge with Eileen Searle continuing her remarkable record in the race by easily winning the women’s 55-59 half distance race in 5hr 25min 48sec to finish 12th overall. The ageless Peter Gibbs finishing second in his 65-70 age group. Neil Green also had a strong race, finishing fifth in the extremely competitive 40-45 age group in 5hr 12min 35sec. Eileen’s run was especially impressive, completing the half marathon in 1hr 40min. Top cyclist Karyn Holland also performed well in her first full

course before showing speed on the bike and determination on the run. Although the experienced cyclist has ridden in plenty of tough races, she considered the 180km around Lake Wanaka was one of the hardest she has ever completed. “The wind was terrible. I was in my smallest gear and only going 10 or 11 kilometres an hour.” Another Nelson competitor, Simon Bloomberg, completed the full distance race in 11hr 27min 31sec to finish third in the 50-59 age group after a good swim and bike and steady run.

Lake rotoiti powerboat regatta 27 & 28 FebRuaRy 2016

Thunder on the water The tranquil waters of Lake Rotoiti will be taken over by the noise of power boats as the annual Rotoiti Power Boat club regatta rolls into town this weekend. The annual regatta runs for two days, Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 February. The event is the third of four major national meetings this year. The first two were in the North Island and the fourth is at Lake Kaniere over Easter weekend.

Club spokesman Joe Blakiston says the Lake Rotoiti event is a highlight for drivers. “This event is really quite special. To race in a national park is pretty magical from a driver’s point of view.” Racing will include a number of classes, including the Grand Prix Hydroplanes capable of doing over 250 kilometres per hour, Formula 1 boats racing around a tight circuit and a full range of power boating events starting at the Junior and Clubman boats. Joe says the event is a great

There are great views from anywhere on the foreshore and you’re guaranteed to see great, close racing because you’re so close to the action.” On the water, Nelson’s Julian Stilwell is one to watch for. second national title on his home water. Stilwell only leads Palmerston North’s Derek McAdam by 7 points, and with 20 points for each race win, will need to finish strong. But there are plenty of other local drivers that will be out on the water, including 13 year old Lee Merrion and 15 year old James Blakiston who will both be racing for the South Island Junior Championship. Richmond’s Patrick Morris will also take over the reins from

father Andy Morris to compete for the South Island Clubman Championship. The Grand Prix Hydroplanes, including Peter Knight Snr’s “The Boss” will contest the South Island GP Championship and the much sort after A.E. Baker Trophy, and have shown some very close racing so far this season. Racing gets underway each day at Lake Rotoiti from 11am and a full programme of racing is planned.
